RESUMO

Hydrothermal vents (HVs) and cold seeps (CSs) are typical deep-sea extreme ecosystems with their own geochemical characteristics to supply the unique living conditions for local communities. Once HVs or CSs stop emission, the dramatic environmental change would pose survival risks to deep-sea organisms. Up to now, limited knowledge has been available to understand the biological responses and adaptive strategy to the extreme environments and their transition from active to extinct stage, mainly due to the technical difficulties and lack of representative organisms. In this study, bathymodiolin mussels, the dominant and successful species surviving in diverse deep-sea extreme ecosystems, were collected from active and extinct HVs (Southwest Indian Ocean) or CSs (South China Sea) via two individual cruises. The transcriptomic analysis and determination of multiple biological indexes in stress defense and metabolic systems were conducted in both gills and digestive glands of mussels, together with the metagenomic analysis of symbionts in mussels. The results revealed the ecosystem- and tissue-specific transcriptional regulation in mussels, addressing the autologous adaptations in antioxidant defense, energy utilization and key compounds (i.e. sulfur) metabolism. In detail, the successful antioxidant defense contributed to conquering the oxidative stress induced during the unavoidable metabolism of xenobiotics commonly existing in the extreme ecosystems; changes in metabolic rate functioned to handle toxic matters in different surroundings; upregulated gene expression of sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase indicated an active sulfide detoxification in mussels from HVs and active stage of HVs & CSs. Coordinately, a heterologous adaptation, characterized by the functional compensation between symbionts and mussels in energy utilization, sulfur and carbon metabolism, was also evidenced by the bacterial metagenomic analysis. Taken together, a new insight was proposed that symbiotic bathymodiolin mussels would develop a "finetuning" strategy combining the autologous and heterologous regulations to fulfill the efficient and effective adaptations for successful survival.

RESUMO

Accelerated eutrophication in lakes reduces the number of submerged macrophytes and alters the residues of glyphosate and its degradation products. However, the effects of submerged macrophytes on the fate of glyphosate remain unclear. We investigated eight lakes with varying trophic levels along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, of which five lakes contained either glyphosate or aminomethylphosphate (AMPA). Glyphosate and AMPA residues were significantly positively correlated with the trophic levels of lakes (P < 0.01). In lakes, glyphosate is degraded through the AMPA and sarcosine pathways. Eight shared glyphosate-degrading enzymes and genes were observed in different lake sediments, corresponding to 44 degrading microorganisms. Glyphosate concentrations in sediments were significantly higher in lakes with lower abundances of soxA (sarcosine oxidase) and soxB (sarcosine oxidase) (P < 0.05). In the presence of submerged macrophytes, oxalic and malonic acids secreted by the roots of submerged macrophytes increased the abundance of glyphosate-degrading microorganisms containing soxA or soxB (P < 0.05). These results revealed that a decrease in the number of submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes may inhibit glyphosate degradation via the sarcosine pathway, leading to a decrease in glyphosate degradation and an increase in glyphosate residues.

RESUMO

Eutrophication is a severe worldwide concern caused by excessive phosphorus release. Thus, significant efforts have been made to develop phosphorus removal techniques, particularly by nanomaterial adsorption. However, because of the limitations associated with nanoparticles including easy agglomeration, and separation challenges, a novel nanocomposite adsorbent with great adsorption performance is urgently required. A sponge adsorbent (MS-CMC@La) was developed in this study to remove phosphorus using melamine sponge (MS), LaCl3, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The results of SEM/EDS, FTIR, and XPS demonstrated that La was well-dispersed on MS-CMC@La. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics met with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.981) and the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.989), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of MS-CMC@La was found to be 15.28 mg/g; the material exhibited excellent selectivity toward phosphorus in the presence of coexisting anion except of F-; the adsorption behavior was greatly impacted by pH. Furthermore, the electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and inner-sphere coordination regulate the phosphate adsorption mechanism, with inner-sphere coordination dominating. In summary, the nano-enriched materials developed in this study are capable of facilitating the application of functionalized sponges in the field of wastewater.

RESUMO

Climate change poses significant threats to the health of coral reefs. The detection of coral coverage is a quantitative method for assessing the health of coral reefs. Valuable insights into the effects of climate change on coral reef ecosystems and the trends in coral reef development can be gained through the monitoring of coral coverage. However, traditional manual methods for estimating coral coverage are time-consuming and labor-intensive, limiting the scalability and efficiency of coral surveys. The field of automated processing for coral video imagery is currently limited, impeding the development of effective techniques for comprehensive coral monitoring and further hindering progress in coral ecosystem monitoring. To cope with these challenges, there is a crucial need for automated systems to efficiently handle large volumes of video data, thereby transforming imaging devices, such as underwater robots, into autonomous sensors capable of conducting reliable and comprehensive surveys. In response to this pressing issue, this study presents a novel video analysis approach, termed the Coral Detection, Ranging, and Assessment (CDRA) algorithm, which combines cutting-edge computer vision techniques including You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) object detection, binocular stereo vision, and tracking algorithms. The CDRA algorithm aims to analyze continuous video segments of coral reefs, enabling the identification, counting, and estimation of size and location of individual coral colonies. Experimental evaluations conducted in controlled pool environments demonstrated the high accuracy of the proposed method, with an average accuracy of 90.7% in estimating coral coverage at different locations. Moreover, field trials conducted in Xidao Island of China verified the effectiveness and robustness of the CDRA algorithm under varying water quality and lighting conditions. The findings of this study represent a significant step towards the development of reliable and automated techniques for coral reef detection, contributing to the advancement of coral reef conservation efforts.

RESUMO

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in global agricultural cultivation. However, little is known about the environmental risks associated with its migration and transformation. We conducted light irradiation experiments to study the dynamics and mechanism of photodegradation of glyphosate in ditches, ponds and lakes, and evaluated the effect of glyphosate photodegradation on algae growth through algae culture experiments. Our results showed that glyphosate in ditches, ponds and lakes could undergo photochemical degradation under sunlight irradiation with the production of phosphate, and the photodegradation rate of glyphosate in ditches could reach 86% after 96 h under sunlight irradiation. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) was the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) for glyphosate photodegradation, and its steady-state concentrations in ditches, ponds and lakes were 6.22 × 10-17, 4.73 × 10-17, and 4.90 × 10-17 M. The fluorescence emission-excitation matrix (EEM) and other technologies further indicated that the humus components in dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nitrite were the main photosensitive substances producing •OH. In addition, the phosphate generated by glyphosate photodegradation could greatly promote the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa, thereby increasing the risk of eutrophication. Thus, glyphosate should be scientifically and reasonably applied to avoid environmental risks.

RESUMO

Crabs can live in diverse lifestyles in both water and benthic environments, which are the basin of microplastics (MPs) inputs. Edible crabs with large consuming quantity, e.g., Scylla serrata were subjected to accumulate MPs in their tissues from surrounding environments and generate biological damages. However, no related research has been conducted. In order to accurately assess the potential risks to both crabs and humans consuming MPs contaminated crabs, S. serrata were exposed to different concentrations (2, 200 and 20,000 µg/L) of polyethylene (PE) microbeads (10-45 µm) for 3 days. The physiological conditions of crabs and a series of biological responses, including DNA damage, antioxidant enzymes activities and their corresponding gene expressions in functional tissues (gills and hepatopancreas) were investigated. PE-MPs accumulated in all tissues of crabs with concentration- and tissue-dependent manner, which was assumed to be via the internal distribution initialized by gills' respiration, filtration and transportation. Significantly increased DNA damages were observed in both gills and hepatopancreas under exposures, however, the physiological conditions of crabs showed no dramatic alterations. Under low and middle concentration exposures, gills energetically activated the first line of antioxidant defense to against oxidative stress, e.g., superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), but lipid peroxidation damage still occurred under high concentration exposure. In comparison, SOD and CAT composed antioxidant defense in hepatopancreas tended to collapse under severe MPs exposure and the defense mechanism attempted to switch to the secondary antioxidant response by compensatively stimulating the activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the content of glutathione (GSH). The diverse antioxidant strategies in gills and hepatopancreas were proposed to be closely related to the accumulation capacity of tissues. The results confirmed the relation between PE-MPs exposure and antioxidant defense in S. serrata, and will help to clarify the biological toxicity and corresponding ecological risks.

RESUMO

A novel adsorbent (FeOOH@PU) for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal was synthesized using a polyurethane foam (PU) and FeOOH via a facile one-step method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) characterized the adsorbent. The influence of environmental factors was investigated to evaluate the adsorption behavior for Cr(VI). Furthermore, adsorption dynamic and adsorption isotherm models described the adsorption performance. This adsorbent also treated electroplating wastewater and remediated simulated Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The adsorbent effectively removed Cr(VI) with a high adsorption rate; its equilibrium rate constant was 13 times that of FeOOH. Cr(VI) removal was a monolayer adsorption process and the maximum adsorption capacity of FeOOH@PU reached 34.9 mg Cr/g. Electrostatic attraction was the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal. Electroplating wastewater became clear and the Cr(VI) concentration decreased from 9.76 to 0.042 mg/L after treatment with FeOOH@PU. Cr enrichment in rice seedlings grown in remediated soil decreased from 7.687 to 6.295 mg Cr/kg. These results suggested that FeOOH@PU was a promising adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal and Cr(VI) stabilization.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent organic pollutants globally, with a continuous increase in MP wastes near and away from the regions of human activities. Studies to date aimed to explore the impact of MPs on ecosystems, but the area of research could not go beyond environmental pollution caused by MPs. To address the menace of MPs, scientists need to pay enough attention to the biogeochemical cycles, microbial communities, and functional microorganisms. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of adding 0.3% (mass ratio) [low-concentration (LC) group] and 1% [high-concentration (HC) group] of polyamide (PA) MP to the soil microenvironment with regard to the aforementioned parameters. PA MP decreased the soil microbial diversity (Shannon and Simpson indices, P < 0.05). At the phylum level, PA MP increased the abundance of Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, and Crenarchaeota (P < 0.05); at the genus level, it enhanced that of Geobacter, Thiobacillus, Pseudomonas, and Bradyrhizobium (P < 0.01) while decreased that of Bacillus, Flavisolibacter, Geothrix, and Pseudarthrobacter (P < 0.05). PA MP affected the carbon (C) cycle. PA MP accelerated the soil C fixation by enhancing the abundance of the genes accA and pccA. The LC PA MP accelerated organic C degradation and methane metabolism by changing the abundance of mnp, chiA, mcrA, pmoA, and mmoX genes, while the HC PA MP inhibited them with increasing the experimental time. Regarding the effects of PA on the nitrogen (N) cycle, the PA MP promoted N assimilation and ammonification by increasing the abundance of the genes gdh and ureC, the impact of PA MP on N fixation and denitrification depended on its concentration and treating time. This study showed that PA MP impacted the microbial consortium, it also affected the C and N cycles and its effect depended on its concentration and the treating time.

RESUMO

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), is a ubiquitous antibiotic in the aquatic environment and received concerns on its health hazards, especially its sub-lethal effects on non-target organisms which were remained largely unknown. In the present study, in order to investigate SMX induced tissue damages and reveal underlying mechanisms, marine mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis were challenged to SMX series (0.5, 50 and 500 µg/L) for six-days followed by six-day-recovery. Comprehensive histopathological alteration (including qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative indices), together with transcriptional and (post-) translational responses of key factors (p38, NFκB and p53) in the p38-MAPK signaling pathway were analyzed in gills and digestive glands. Tissue-specific responses were clearly investigated with gills showing more prompt responses and digestive glands showing higher tolerance to SMX. The histopathology showed that SMX triggered inflammatory damages in both tissues and quantitative analysis revealed more significant responses, suggesting its potential as a valuable health indicator. SMX activated expressions of p38, NFκB and p53 at transcriptional and (post-) translational levels, especially after exposed to low level SMX, evidenced by p38 coupled with NFκB/p53 regulation on immunity defense in mussels. Less induction of targeted molecules under severe SMX exposure indicated such signaling transduction may not be efficient enough and can result in inflammatory damages. Taken together, this study expanded the understanding of aquatic SMX induced health risk in marine mussels and the underlying regulation mechanism through p38 signaling transduction.

RESUMO

Glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) draw great concern due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems. The individual and combined effects of glyphosate and AMPA on aquatic plants in different ecological niches need to be explored. This study aimed to investigate the ecotoxicity of glyphosate and AMPA on the emergent macrophyte Acorus calamus, phytoplankton Chlorella vulgaris, and submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans after their exposure to glyphosate and AMPA alone and to their mixture. Medium and low concentrations of glyphosate (≤ 0.5 mg L-1) significantly inhibited the growth of V. natans and promoted the growth of C. vulgaris (P < 0.05) but had no significant effect on the growth of A. calamus (P > 0.05). AMPA (≤ 5.0 mg L-1) did not significantly influence the relative growth rate (except C. vulgaris) or malonaldehyde levels but significantly altered the expression levels of chlorophyll-related genes and superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] genes in the aquatic plants examined. AMPA mainly affected the oxidative phosphorylation pathway in V. natans and not those in other two plants, indicating that V. natans was more sensitive to AMPA-induced oxidative damage. Moreover, antagonistic effects on plant growth were observed when plants were exposed to low concentrations of glyphosate + AMPA (≤ 0.1 + 0.1 mg L-1). When the concentration of glyphosate + AMPA reached 0.5 + 0.5 and 5.0 + 5.0 mg L-1, the growth of the submerged macrophyte was additively or synergistically inhibited, but the growth of the emergent macrophyte and phytoplankton was antagonistically inhibited. Our results indicated that both the individual and combined effects of glyphosate and AMPA might alter the vertical structure of shallow lakes and accelerate the conversion of shallow lakes from grass-based to algal-based lakes.

RESUMO

Pseudomonas sp. Y-5, a strain with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) capacity, was isolated from the Wuhan Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant. This strain could rapidly remove high concentrations of inorganic nitrogen. Specifically, Pseudomonas sp. Y-5 removed 103 mg/L of NH4+-N in 24 h without nitrate or nitrite accumulation when NH4+-N was its sole nitrogen source. The NH4+-N removal efficiency (RE) was 97.26%, and the average removal rate (RR) was 4.30 mg/L/h. Strain Y-5 also removed NO3--N and NO2--N even in aerobic conditions, with average RRs of 4.39 and 4.23 mg/L/h, respectively, and REs of up to 99.34% and 95.81% within 24 h. When cultured in SND medium (SNDM-1), strain Y-5 achieved an NH4+-N RE of up to 97.80% and a total nitrogen (TN) RE of 93.01%, whereas NO3--N was fully depleted in 48 h. Interestingly, high nitrite concentrations did not inhibit the nitrification capacity of Y-5 when grown in SNDM-2, the RE of NH4+-N and TN reached 96.29% and 94.26%, respectively, and nitrite was consumed completely. Strain Y-5 also adapted well to high concentrations of ammonia (~401.68 mg NH4+-N/L) or organic nitrogen (~315.12 mg TN/L). Our results suggested that Pseudomonas sp. Y-5 achieved efficient simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, thus demonstrating its potential applicability in the treatment of nitrogen-polluted wastewater.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in farmland soils. However, few studies have evaluated their effects on the microbial community structure and nitrogen cycle of farmland soils. Here, 0.3% and 1% (mass percentage) of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs were added to paddy soil to evaluate their impact on the paddy soil microenvironment. The alpha index of the PLA MP treatment was significantly different from that of the control group (p-value < 0.05). In contrast, the indices of the PET and PVC MP treatments were not different from the control (p-value > 0.05). Among the MP treatments, the alpha index of the PLA MP group was significantly different from the PET and PVC MP groups (p-value < 0.05). PCoA analysis also indicated that there were differences between PLA and other MP groups, and different MP concentrations and exposure times had a great impact on microbial composition. The three MPs affected NH4+ metabolism by changing the abundance of a NH2OH-forming gene (amoA) and an organic nitrogen-forming gene (gdh), as well as the abundances of Thiobacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Anaeromyxobacter, Geobacter, and Desulfobacca. Further, the MPs affected NO3- metabolism by regulating the abundance of the nirS and nirK genes and the abundance of Nitrospirae. In contrast, NO2- metabolism was not significantly affected by the MPs due to the low concentration of NO2-, which was attributed to the high abundance of nirS and nirK in the sample. Taken together, our findings indicated that MP addition may have an inhibitory effect on the nitrogen cycle in paddy soils and that the effect of degradable MPs may be greater than that of their non-degradable counterparts. Given the increasing severity of worldwide MP contamination, additional studies are required to assess their impact on global ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles.

RESUMO

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), recognized as emerging pollutant, has been frequently detected in aquatic environment. However, effects induced by SMX and the underneath mechanism on non-target aquatic organisms, marine mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), are still largely unknown. In present study, marine mussels were exposed to SMX (nominal concentrations 0.5, 50 and 500 µg/L) for 6 days, followed by 6 days depuration and responses of antioxidant defenses, e.g. superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), etc., at transcriptional, translational and functional levels were evaluated in two vital tissues, gills and digestive glands. Results showed SMX can be accumulated in mussels while the bio-accumulative ability was low under the experimental condition. A systemic but not completely synchronous antioxidant defense at different levels upon SMX exposure. The transcriptional alteration was more sensitive and had the potential to be used as early warning of SMX induced ecotoxicity. Complementary function of antioxidant enzymes with specific alteration of metabolism related gene (gst) suggested that further researches should focused on SMX metabolism and SMX induced effects simultaneously. Significant tissue-specific antioxidant responses were discovered and gills showed earlier and quicker reacting ability than digestive glands, which was closely related to the functional diversity and different thresholds of xenobiotics allowance.

RESUMO

The accumulation of atrazine in sediments raises wide concern due to its potential negative effects on aquatic environments. Here we collected sediments and different submerged macrophytes to simulate natural shallow lakes and to measure atrazine levels and submerged macrophyte biomass. We determined gene expressions in submerged macrophytes treated with or without atrazine. We also examined atrazine concentrations and its metabolite structures in submerged macrophytes. When the initial concentration of atrazine in sediments ranged from 0.1 to 2.0 mg kg-1 dry weight (DW), atrazine levels in the pore water of the sediments ranged from 0.003 to 0.05 mg L-1 in 90 days. Atrazine did not show obvious long-term effects on the biomass of Potamogeton crispus and Myriophyllum spicatum (P > 0.05). On day 90, gene expressions related to cell wall in P. crispus were changed by atrazine phytotoxicity. Moreover, the decrease in the number genes controlling light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-binding proteins verified the toxic effects of atrazine on the photosynthesis of M. spicatum. Compared with unexposed plants on day 90, ribosome pathway was significantly enriched with differentially expressed genes after submerged macrophytes were exposed to 2.0 mg kg-1 DW atrazine (P < 0.05). In addition, shoots and roots of P. crispus and M. spicatum could absorb the equal amount of atrazine (P > 0.05). Once absorbed by submerged macrophytes, atrazine was degraded into 1-hydroxyisopropylatrazine, hydroxyatrazine, deethylatrazine, didealkylatrazine, cyanuric acid, and biuret, and some of its metabolites could conjugate with organic acids, cysteinyl ß-alanine, and glucose. This study establishes a foundation for aquatic ecological risk assessments and the phytoremediation of atrazine in sediments.

RESUMO

The impacts of environmental pollutants on marine organisms can be determined by the routes of exposure. Various routes of exposure, including dietary exposure and waterborne exposure with or without feeding, were applied to study the cytogenetic responses in marine mussels Mytilus galloprovincials to typical pollutants, BaP (53.74 ± 19.79 µg/L) and Cu (47.38 ± 3.10 µg/L). The increased DNA strand breaks and micronucleus formation were found in haemocytes of mussels via the dietary exposure, indicating the vital role of trophic transfer in toxicity induction. The deeper exploration to relate BaP induced cytogenetic alterations with key antioxidant defense factors, SOD and GST, was performed under different exposure routes. The results revealed the significantly inhibited SOD activity via the trophic transfer, suggesting more direct or prompt role of SOD in antioxidant defense. On contrary, gene expressions of both sod and gst were up-regulated upon all routes of exposures, and showed negative correlation with enzyme activities. The results suggested the asynchronous regulation of studied antioxidant factors at transcriptional and enzyme functional level in mussels upon the change of exposure routes. The study brings out the first observation of trophic transfer influenced cytogenetic and antioxidant responses to pollutants and their alterative risk to marine organisms.

RESUMO

Atrazine contamination is of great concern due to its widespread occurrence in shallow lakes. Here, the distribution and degradation of atrazine in acidic and alkaline lake systems were investigated. Meanwhile, the bacterial communities in different sediments and the effects of environmental factors on atrazine-degrading bacteria were evaluated. In the lake systems without plants, atrazine levels in sediment interstitial water reached peak concentrations on the 4th d. More than 90% of atrazine was then degraded in all sediment interstitial water by day 30. Meanwhile, the degradation rate of atrazine in alkaline sediments was faster than that in acidic sediments. Values of hydroxylated metabolites in the acidic lake sediments tended to be greater. Moreover, the amounts of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicute, Nitrospinae, Aminicenantes, Ignavibacteriae and Saccharibacteria in acidic Tangxunhu Lake sediments were significantly different from alkaline Honghu Lake sediments, while the amounts of Cyanobacteria and Saccharibacteria in sediments treated with atrazine were significantly greater than those in sediments without atrazine (P < 0.05). Notably, pH was the most relevant environmental factor in the quantitative variation of atrazine-degrading bacteria, including in Clostridium-sensu-stricto, Pseudomonas, Comamonas and Rhodobacter. The Mantel test results indicated that the degradation of atrazine in different sediments was mainly affected by the sediment physicochemical properties rather than by the addition of atrazine and the cultivation of hydrophytes.

RESUMO

Benzo(α)pyrene (BaP) and lead (Pb) are common pollutants discharged greatly in ocean and causing detrimental impacts on marine organisms. Although mussels are one of the most prominent and frequently studied biological models, the research on their genomic alterations induced by the mixture of two totally different chemicals, is still rare. In present study, local marine mussels Mytilus coruscus were exposed in vivo to BaP (53.74 ±â€¯19.79 µg/L), Pb (2.58 ±â€¯0.11 mg/L) and their mixture for 6 days. The genotoxic damages were assessed by comet assay, micronucleus (MNi) test, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Significantly increased though transitory genomic damage was investigated after the exposure and showed consistency using various detecting methods. Additive genotoxicity was only found after 3 days combined exposure by means of MNi test, suggesting that BaP and Pb may play with alternative biological targets during metabolism and/or interaction with the genome. The geno-stability and the recovery capability were further detected both in vivo and in vitro after challenged by BaP. RAPD results showed coherence in BaP induced genotoxicity, together with time-specific alterations. The genomic instability was found to recover in both in vivo and in vitro exposure scenarios in present study. To our knowledge, this is the first study to focus on the genotoxicitiy induced by BaP, Pb and their mixture by multiple detecting techniques. The attempt to utilize model pollutants and marine organism to validate the potential value of RAPD analysis highlighted that it might be a useful tool in the research of genotoxicology, especially on the effect-mechanism interplay at genetic level.

RESUMO

The accumulation of atrazine in lake sediments leads to persistent contamination, which may damage the succeeding submerged plants and create potential threats to the lake eco-environment. In this study, the degradation characteristics of atrazine and its detoxication by Myriophyllum spicatum and the associated bacterial community in lake sediments were evaluated. M. spicatum absorbed more than 18-fold the amount of atrazine in sediments and degraded atrazine to hydroxyatrazine (HA), deelthylatrazine (DEA), didealkylatrazine (DDA), cyanuric acid (CYA) and biuret. The formation of biuret suggested for the first time, the ring opening of atrazine in an aquatic plant. The residual rate of atrazine was 6.5 ±â€¯2.0% in M. spicatum-grown sediment, which was significantly lower than the 18.0 ±â€¯2.5% in unplanted sediments on day 60 (P < 0.05). Moreover, on day 15, the increase in contents of HA, CYA and biuret in M. spicatum-grown sediment indicated that M. spicatum promoted the degradation and removal of atrazine following rapid dechlorination. The colonization of M. spicatum and the addition of atrazine altered the structure of the dominant bacterial community in sediments, including effects on Nitrospirae and Acidobacteria. Based on the maximum amount among the genera of atrazine-degrading bacteria, Acetobacter was most likely responsible for the degradation of atrazine. Our findings reveal the natural attenuation of atrazine by aquatic organisms.

RESUMO

Both benzo(α)pyrene (BaP) and metals are frequently found in marine ecosystem and can cause detrimental effects in marine organism, especially the filter feeder-marine mussels. Although the biological responses in mussels have been well-studied upon the single metal or BaP exposure, the information about antioxidant defense, especially in different tissues of mussels, are still limited. Considering the variety of contaminants existing in the actual marine environment, single BaP (56 µg/L) and the co-exposure with Cu, Cd and Pb (50 µg/L, 50 µg/L and 3 mg/L respectively) were applied in a 6 days exposure followed by 6 days depuration experiment. The alterations of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) level were assessed in haemolymph, gills and digestive glands of marine mussels, Mytilus coruscus. An unparalleled change in antioxidant biomarkers was observed in all cells/tissues, with the SOD activity showing higher sensitivity to exposure. A tissue-specific response showing unique alteration in gill was investigated, indicating the different function of tissues during stress responses. Depressed antioxidant effects were induced by BaP-metals co-exposure, indicating the interaction may alter the intact properties of BaP. To our knowledge, this is the first research to explore the antioxidant defense induced by combined exposure of BaP-metals regarding to tissue-specific responses in marine mussels. The results and experimental model will provide valuable information and can be utilized in the investigation of stress response mechanisms, especially in relation to tissue functions in marine organism in the future.

RESUMO

We investigated sediments with high atrazine accumulation capability from 6 eutrophic lakes in Hubei Province of central China. Almost all lakes have atrazine in their sediments because of human activities. Honghu Lake and Liangzihu Lake were found to have higher levels of atrazine in sediment: 0.171 and 0.114 mg kg-1, respectively. The results showed that lake sediments could adsorb atrazine six times faster than soils. The equilibrium partition coefficient of atrazine desorption (KPd) is much larger than the adsorption equilibrium partition coefficient (KPa) of atrazine, indicating that the residue of atrazine in water is easily immobilized by the sediments. Meanwhile, the incubation experiment showed that the removal rateof atrazine in Potamogeton crispus-planted and Myriophyllum spicatum-planted sediments reached >90%, while the rate in unplanted sediments was 77.2 ± 2.12% over 45 d. In unplanted sediment, the half-life of atrazine dissipation was 14.30 d, which was strongly enhanced by P. crispus and M. spicatum, greatly reducing the half-life to 8.60 and 9.72 d, respectively. These two submerged macrophytes are considered to be potential tools in the remediation of atrazine-contaminated sediments.
